It's been 54 years since Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated on April 4, 1968 on a balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tenn.
Dr. King had gone to Memphis to support sanitation workers on strike for equitable pay, safer working conditions, and better job opportunity -- and to begin to organize national advocacy efforts around the issue.
Black workers and King had struck a decisive blow against economic apartheid in America. Why did it die?
